Today was a good day.

Today was a good day.

February 4, 2020 Posted by Liette Wilson 5 Comments

I learned how to make a full Haitian meal by watching Germaine, writing down everything she did and taking photos.  I know how to cook some Haitian food, but it never tastes as good.  I hope that now that I have the secret, it will be almost as good at home.

Jim managed to fix the screens in the front entryway with almost no tools and a power screwdriver that held charge for only 2 mins at a time. Way to “degaje” Jim – which is the Haitian word for making do.

  • Replacing screen in door without a staple gun
  • Slow painstakenly way of putting the staples in to hold the screen

Jim also worked hard at trying to fix the automatic shut off on the pump to the water tanks.  He thinks he might have found the temporary fix until we can get some real experts from the Texas team down here again. He’ll be following up in the morning to see if it’s working the way he hopes.

I got a few more photos and letters from students at the school.  Less than 10 to go – so I hope those last few kids show up tomorrow.

We had a walk with the kids along the canal although both Jim and I were convinced it may be a full moon tonight since they were a handful today.

There was a full on attack against termites in the cupboard in the bathroom and some rearranging of fridges to find the one that works best to put in the kitchen.

Karen and Luckner worked hard at going over expenses and spending to make sure Karen has all the info needed for her financial reports. And Luckner and I spent an hour and a half talking about information the board will need for the upcoming Annual Report and dreaming about how we can continue to help the Haitian people in the future

I helped two kids with their English homework, which involved translating a paragraph into French of all things. So the kids are being taught in Creole in an English class and they have to translate into French – seems a bit crazy to me!  And Jim, Karen, JJ and I had another trains game.  JJ has some serious good luck at trains – wins almost every evening!

Yesterday was a good day too!

We had a lovely church service, followed by a delicious meal for those in attendance.

  • Lining up for a meal after church
  • JJ and friend enjoying a good meal after church on Sunday

In the afternoon, there were more games including a treasure hunt and some partner games, followed by a rousing soccer game at the school.

  • Sunday games
  • Mama Karen shaving Dieunel
  • Magdala being shaved by Dickieson
  • Water Game
  • Soccer game Kids with Liette Sunday afternoon

What a lovely blog Liette. Thank you for keeping us all informed while you were there and we were here ( wishing we were there too). Sounds like a lot of fun for the kids and work for the adults was happening. Appreciate all you and Jim have done while there. The kids and mama will miss you when you go.

Well done everyone. Where are the tools? Is the staple gun missing?
Jim, do up a list of what is there and what is needed. The pot luck after church looks great. Catching up on the reports after 11 months will take some cooking of the books.
Thanks for all you guys accomplished.
