Settling In

Keith

Well, Joan and I are slowly getting unpacked and settled into the schedule at HATS and adjusting to the heat here in Haiti. Actually we have had a lot of rain so far which keeps the temperature down but still the humidity is energy sapping.

Yesterday, the kids thought they were going to have a Rain-Day from school. Most of the teachers and students arrive by foot so trudging though the rain and mud is no fun. The roads have a lot of potholes and pooled water as a result of all the rain and Hurricane Matthew. Anyway they persevered and went off to school. All the house mothers, the cook and the temporary Chief all arrived at devotions with garbage bags on their head to protect their hairdos!!!!

Joan and Karen (who is not even here right now) and the house mothers are putting things on my to-do list faster than I can write them down, never mind actually getting around to doing them. However the kids were missing their tire swing so that got moved to the top of the list.
Because – “It’s all about the kids!!”

 Something is missing...

Joan and I made our first trip into ST. Marc for some groceries and supplies. Mostly uneventful except that the roads are in horrible shape north of Pont Sonde. And we were stopped twice by the police but thankfully, unlike Dickie, I had my licence in the truck.

Joan obviously did not get enough shopping in St. Marc so she went shopping at the HATS market when she got back. Who says money doesn’t grow on trees?

Mike and Nicki took over from us last spring when we went home. The kids are constantly asking when you guys are coming back. Sonson and Markenson keep calling me Mike. I guess they think all middle-aged, balding, fun loving, good looking white guys are called Mike.

Sonson and Magdela ( the pre-schoolers) enjoy playing together.

The internet is not working these days and Natcom is working on a resolution; hopefully before Karen gets back. In the meantime we are managing with a 3G USB flash – anyone remember dial-up internet access? So Ii’ll send the blog and hope for the best.

Let’s see the instructions:
1. Go to highest place possible – Check – The roof at Karen’s house
2. Point flash towards highest object – Check – Pointed towards water tower at the hospital
3. Press send – Check
4. Go for coffee – Check
5. Come back in an hour………………………..

I hope you got it…

Oh what a great blog! I miss those kids! Sonson is looking so grown up…more like Markenson all the time. I’ve often thought that too about balding and handsome white men ;).

So great to read your blogs again and smile and sometimes laugh out loud as I read! I am sure the kids and employees are thrilled to have you back. Keif, no garbage bag for you to keep your “do” dry???
